Diabetic Support Group

By Jackie Barnhardt, (Outreach and Membership Director 1999-2011)

Due to the outstanding response to the Delicious Diabetic Dining cooking classes offered in 2006, Open Harvest has arranged to facilitate a new diabetic support group. As participants in these classes asked engaging questions, it became clear that there is a need for more support for diabetics and the families that cook for them.

Instructor Bonnie Bake offered to help launch this support group. She has been cooking for a diabetic for 38 years and presented practical diabetic cooking tips in February and April 2006 to sold-out classes.

Topics for the support group include how to prepare nutritious meals, challenges of a diabetic lifestyle, coping with diabetes, education, and sharing experiences. More topics will be determined by participants.

Open Harvest's mission is "good health through good nutrition." We strive to provide delicious nutrition to meet your dietary needs. The co-op offers a wide variety of healthy foods to meet many special dietary needs.

Co-op values include self-help and self-responsibility. The support group is not intended to be a substitute for professional advice from your healthcare provider. Consult your doctor, dietitian, or healthcare provider if you are seeking professional services.

Meetings are scheduled through June 2008.
